Storytelling is an essential tool when developing your business strategy with messaging that is memorable, emotionally engaging, and ultimately profitable.

Developing your narrative allows your brand to share your history, challenges, successes and value propositions.

The most successful brands do this by balancing emotion and information. A great story is easy to understand and simplifies big ideas. Even more, it surprises, delights, makes audiences think and feel, and motivates them to act in ways that data cannot.

According to Harrision Monarth, New York Times bestselling author of The Confident Speaker, stated: “A story can go where quantitative analysis is denied admission: our hearts. Data can persuade people, but it doesn’t inspire them to act; to do that, you need to wrap your vision in a story that fires the imagination and stirs the soul.”

In fact, storytelling will not only increase your brand like ability in your audience’s eyes, it can also be up to 22 times more memorable than facts.

Some people are born story tellers, yarn spinners, gift of the gab. They can capture an audience and have them hanging on their every word.

But did you know the art of story telling can also be learned?

The key to telling a great story is not only having a clear message to deliver – but knowing your audience too.

Ask yourself: What do they like? What don’t they like? What drives them? What inspires them?  What is the message you want to transmit to your audience, and what do you never want them to forget? What do you want to be remembered for? What is your dream headline? Consider the emotion you want to evoke in your audience every time they interact with your brand. Your audience may forget what you say, but they will not forget how you made them feel (which is important because emotions drive purchase more than logic.

Knowing these insights can help you craft your message, or story, in a way that will speak directly to your target audience. It also helps you understand the best medium to reach them – be it mainstream media, social media or a combination of the two.
